A New Zealander by birth, Susanne arrived in Atlanta in March 2007 after having lived in the UK and Canada. She has now moved again to Toronto. Both a painter and traditional printmaker her work features a variety of subjects but musical instruments have been the main focus of her recent paintings however she also enjoys painting the figure and abstracts.
The Musical Series began as the result of a commission when she was asked to create a painting as a gift for a music recording producer in Toronto. Because a cello has such beautiful curves it was a natural choice of subject for her. The musical theme was very inspiring and she soon expanded the series to include saxophones and violins. Her idea is not to realistically portray the instruments but to capture the emotional feeling evoked by music through the use of powerful images and rich colors. Paintings from the series have been used, with her permission, as posters for musical events in countries as far apart as Australia and Switzerland, on a classical CD cover, a Music Society Cookbook and as a holiday greeting card for the Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House in the UK.
Her paintings, collagraph prints and sculpture are in collections in Singapore, Canada, New Zealand, Europe, the UK and USA.
